There isn’t any snow on the ground in my neck of the woods, but temperatures are down, Christmas festivities abound, and Christmas Day is right around the corner. So even thought the first official day of Winter is still a couple of weeks away, today we are going to dive right in and begin to discuss some “hot” Winter wedding trends.

Color Trends:

Some of your typical Winter wedding colors like reds, greens, silver, white, and gold are still as popular as ever, but a trend this season is throwing in some unexpected color alternatives into your color palette.  Thing orange with a bunch of greenery, turquoise, mint, or deep purple.  All look great also with neutral colors like grey and tan.  Other great colors for winter: lighter hues of blue and silver, blushes and gold, or of course emerald or deep reds.  Stark contrast are in and really make a statement and add definition to every aspect of your wedding.

Flowers:

Most of your typical wedding flowers are not in season in the winter, especially not in Utah!  But since you can’t be outside for a Winter wedding, bring the outdoors inside!  Incorporate rustic plants along with the flowers.  Holly and pine needles capture the season.  Baby’s breath takes on the appearance of snowflakes or snowcapped flowers in an arrangement.  Evergreen will never grow out of style for a Winter wedding, but you do need to decide how, where, and how much of it to include.  Think beyond it to different greens and textures: ferns, moss, succulents, etc.

Decor:

Incorporate some of the candy and sweets of the season into the decor as well with candy canes, chocolates, or marshmallows! Want something more elegant, tall tapered candles in fancy stands or candelabras are hot right now.  Also big is woodland type decor for your Winter wedding and incorporating evergreens, pinecones, and even vintage thermos containers as vases!  Kumquats and clementines are citrus winter fruits that can add a pop of color and texture to centerpieces or even bouquets.

Invitations:

Simple is key for invitations this season.  Ornate calligraphy in hues of gold or silver on dark colored paper don’t need anything else to make them fancy or to stand out.  Continue the woodsy theme with paper that has a wood grain appearance.

Food:

Hot chocolate Bars!  Mmmm!  You also can do fun season themed treats like Gingerbread cookies, eggnog drinks, hot apple cider, or fun warm finger foods.  As temperatures drop, most meals or food items to be served at Winter weddings tend to be much more robust and hearty.  Don’t load your guests down too much…consider serving mini portions or classic entrees, like steak, mashed potatoes, broccoli, or asparagus.  In smaller portions, guests don’t get to weighted down, but can also try more than one dish.

Wedding Cake:

Cakes are simplified this season.  Simple, yet elegant.  Instead of tall cake tiers, smaller one-tier wedding cakes are popping u on Winter wedding dessert tables. Another fun idea is to have several smaller cakes per table allowing guest so try several different flavors. Think: buttercream-frosted cakes with additions like seasonal fruit, ferns and toasted coconut.  Metallic wedding cakes are still extremely popular.  This season though the metallic details are toned down a bit with accents like gold-frosted pinstripes or gold flakes sprinkled on a simple buttercream cake.

Favors:

Snowflake sugar cookies, homemade hot cocoa mix, etc.  Use some of the fun elements of the season to create simple, inexpensive, but super cute favors to send home with your wedding guests and to show your appreciation for all their support! Other fun ideas, which would also make great gifts for your wedding party, include mittens or gloves or even blankets. Provide the extra personal touch by engraving the wedding date or guest’s names on the blankets.

Dresses:

There are so many wedding dress options out there!  Your Winter wedding dress can be whatever you want.  Simple and elegant, a princess ball gown, or mix and match with separates.  Make it uniquely yours!  A lot of wedding dress designers are creating knit tops, turtlenecks or tops with a more plus fabric and pairing those with voluminous skirts.  How cute is that for Winter wonderland photo session!  Also big are cute sweaters, shrugs, and boleros.  We saw pink dresses for Fall and Summer, now we are seeing blue wedding dresses that are big for the Winter season.

Bridesmaid Dresses:

We know lace dresses are still extremely popular, but for Winter, lace dresses are updated and accented with gold or other metallic thread.  It gives them just enough sparkle and glam for the season.  Metallic dresses in general are extremely popular as well. Crystal embellished yokes or lace details on the neckline are very popular and replace the need for necklaces.

This is just the tip of the Winter wedding idea “iceberg!”  Over the course of the next few weeks we will dive deeper into each of these areas and hopefully provide you with a plethora of  great Winter wedding trends, inspirations, and ideas!
